Sussex, located in the southeast of England, is a region rich in history, natural beauty, and cultural significance. Our picturesque county is a tapestry of rolling hills, lush woodlands, and vibrant meadows.

The region’s diverse landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for a variety of outdoor activities. The stunning South Downs National Park which offers rolling hills, chalk cliffs and beautiful coastal views is perfect for those looking for a spot to hike or cycle, and with a number of beautiful beaches in Sussex from Brighton to Camber Sands, you’ll be spoilt for choice of where to enjoy a brisk coastal walk. Whether you’re an avid hiker a cycling enthusiast or simply someone who enjoys a leisurely stroll, the extensive network of trails and paths will not disappoint.

The Ship Inn invites you to explore the enchanting countryside of Sussex, where every corner reveals a new adventure and a chance to reconnect with nature.

NUMBER TWO

Award-winning gardens

For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, the gardens of Sussex are a must-visit. Renowned for their beauty and diversity, these gardens showcase a stunning array of flora and fauna.

Great Dixter House & Gardens is a vibrant and immersive garden with a 15th century house restored by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Their stunning gardens surround the house, each with beautiful views of the others. The Barn Garden is a must-visit as it is adorned with Brunswick fig trees.

Herstmonceux Castle, Gardens & Grounds is set in 300 acres and includes the Elizabethan Garden – the largest and most prestigious of their collection. Their thoughtfully managed woodland and beautiful gardens perfectly surround the 15th century moated castle.

NUMBER THREE

Historical towns

Sussex’s rich history is woven into the fabric of its countryside. Boasting numerous historical sites, including the famous Battle of Hastings site in Battle, where William the Conqueror defeated King Harold in 1066, the county is a treasure trove of historical landmarks.

Rye, a picturesque town in East Sussex, is a historical treasure trove waiting to be explored. Steeped in history, Rye was once a vital member of the Cinque Ports, playing a crucial role in England’s maritime defense. Wander through its charming cobblestone streets, particularly Mermaid Street, lined with beautifully preserved medieval and Tudor buildings. Visit Rye Castle (Ypres Tower), a 14th-century fortress that now houses a museum showcasing the town’s rich past. Literary enthusiasts will appreciate Lamb House, the former home of renowned authors Henry James and E.F. Benson. With its blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and natural charm, Rye provides a unique and enriching experience for all visitors. Discover the stories and secrets of this enchanting town, where history comes alive at every corner.

The Ship Inn, Rye, provides the perfect home away from home when exploring the perfect blend of history, culture and natural beauty that Sussex has to offer.

NUMBER FOUR

Local produce & culinary delights

No visit would be complete without indulging in the region’s culinary offerings. The fertile soil and mild climate make Sussex a prime location for growing a variety of produce. From fresh fruits and vegetables to award-winning wines, the county’s local produce is celebrated for its quality and flavour. Visit one of Sussex’s many farmers’ markets to sample the best of the region’s bounty. Here, you can find everything from artisanal cheeses to freshly baked bread, all made with locally sourced ingredients.

We recommend a visit to Rye Fish Market who stock a large selection of fish and seafood, along with a ready to eat deli counter. A large proportion of the fish is from their small fleet of local day boats. The harbour in Rye is tidal, so their fishermen go out to sea on one tide, spend just 12 hours at sea and then return on the next high tide. This means that their fish is caught with sustainable methods and is always wonderfully fresh. Located just a couple of minutes’ drive down from The Ship Inn, it’s ideal for stocking up on the delicious local produce of the region before heading home.
